Ready to take your scuba diving skills to the next level?

Jeff’s Diving World is running a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course at Vobster Quay on 17–18 October 2026, giving qualified Open Water Divers the opportunity to build confidence, develop new underwater skills and gain experience across a range of Adventure Dives.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course is designed around practical diving rather than sitting in a classroom. The programme consists of five Adventure Dives, including the required Deep Adventure Dive and Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive, together with three additional Adventure Dives selected as part of the course.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course at Vobster Quay Somerset with Jeff’s Diving World – 17 and 18 October 2026

Take Your Diving Beyond Open Water

Completing your initial Open Water qualification teaches you the essential foundations of scuba diving.

Advanced Open Water takes the next step.

Rather than simply repeating your existing skills, the course introduces you to different types of diving and provides supervised experience that can help you become a more confident, capable and knowledgeable diver.

The emphasis is on gaining experience underwater while working with your instructor.

PADI describes Advanced Open Water Diver training as a way to build confidence and expand scuba skills through different Adventure Dives.

Five Adventure Dives Over Two Days

The course takes place across the weekend of:

Saturday 17 October 2026

and

Sunday 18 October 2026

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver qualification requires five Adventure Dives.

Two form the core of the programme:

Deep Adventure Dive

Develop your experience of deeper recreational diving while learning more about planning, depth awareness and the considerations involved when diving beyond typical entry-level depths.

Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive

Improve your ability to navigate underwater using a compass alongside natural navigation techniques.

Good underwater navigation is one of the most valuable skills a diver can develop and can significantly improve confidence, awareness and dive planning.

Three Additional Adventure Dives

The remaining three Adventure Dives allow you to broaden your diving experience further.

Available Adventure Dives vary according to location, conditions, instructor availability and the planned course programme, so Jeff will confirm the three elective dives being undertaken for this particular weekend.

PADI offers a broad selection of Adventure Dive subjects, which can include areas such as buoyancy, wreck diving, underwater imaging and fish identification.

Why Take the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

This course isn’t simply about adding another certification card to your collection.

It is about gaining real diving experience.

Advanced training can help you develop:

  • Greater confidence underwater
  • Improved underwater navigation
  • Experience of deeper diving
  • Better situational awareness
  • More refined buoyancy and control
  • Greater familiarity with dive planning
  • Experience across different diving activities
  • Increased independence and competence as a diver

It can also introduce you to areas of diving that you may later decide to pursue through dedicated PADI Specialty courses.

Individual Adventure Dives may potentially contribute towards the corresponding specialty qualification, subject to PADI requirements and your instructor’s assessment.

Training at Vobster Quay

The course will take place at Vobster Quay Open Water Activity Centre in Somerset.

Vobster Quay is one of the UK’s established inland open-water diving locations and describes itself as offering 36 acres of water for scuba diving, freediving and open-water swimming, together with supporting on-site facilities.

An inland diving environment is particularly useful for structured diver education because it allows instructors to plan and supervise specific training exercises within an established open-water facility.

For students progressing from their Open Water qualification, it provides the opportunity to concentrate on developing new skills while gaining further experience in genuine open-water conditions.

Who Can Take the Advanced Open Water Course?

The course is aimed at divers who have already completed their initial Open Water training and want to progress.

PADI states that divers can begin the Advanced Open Water Diver programme once they hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification, Junior Open Water Diver certification or an appropriate qualifying entry-level certification from another recognised training organisation.

You don’t need to consider yourself an “advanced” diver before enrolling.

The purpose of the course is to help you advance your diving skills and experience.

If you hold a qualification from another training organisation or are unsure whether your current certification meets the requirements, speak to Jeff before booking.

Is There an Exam?

Unlike an initial Open Water course, the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver programme is heavily focused on practical diving.

There is knowledge development associated with the Adventure Dives, but PADI states that there is no final examination for the Advanced Open Water Diver course.

That makes this a particularly enjoyable progression course for divers who want to spend their time developing practical skills underwater.

Build Confidence With Jeff’s Diving World

Jeff’s Diving World provides diver training with an emphasis on developing practical skills, knowledge and confidence.

Jeff George continues to develop his own professional diving qualifications and is also a PADI AWARE Shark and Ray Conservation Specialty Instructor, supporting Jeff’s Diving World’s broader commitment to diver education and responsible interaction with the underwater environment.

The Advanced Open Water weekend gives students the opportunity to work directly with Jeff while developing skills that can benefit almost every future dive.

What Should I Bring?

Participants should speak directly with Jeff regarding the equipment requirements for the weekend.

Depending on your arrangements, you may need appropriate personal diving equipment, exposure protection, certification details and other equipment required for the planned Adventure Dives.

Because this is an October open-water course, appropriate thermal protection should be discussed with Jeff in advance.

Do not assume that equipment hire, site admission, cylinders or other charges are included unless Jeff has confirmed this as part of your booking.

Important Vobster Quay Information

Vobster Quay currently requires visitors taking part in water activities to pre-book through its booking system.

Jeff will advise course participants about the arrangements that apply to this training weekend, including arrival times, site procedures and anything that needs to be completed before attending.
