Ready to take your scuba diving skills to the next level?

Jeff’s Diving World is running a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course at Vobster Quay on 24–25 October 2026, giving qualified Open Water Divers the opportunity to develop their confidence, improve their underwater skills and gain practical experience across a range of Adventure Dives.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course is built around practical diving experience rather than spending an entire weekend in a classroom.

The programme consists of five Adventure Dives, including the required Deep Adventure Dive and Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive, together with three additional Adventure Dives selected as part of the course programme.

Take Your Diving Beyond Open Water

Completing your initial Open Water qualification provides the essential foundations needed to become a recreational scuba diver.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course takes those foundations further.

Rather than simply repeating skills you have already learned, Advanced Open Water introduces you to different diving activities and provides supervised experience designed to help you become a more confident, capable and knowledgeable diver.

The emphasis is on developing genuine experience underwater while working alongside your instructor.

For divers wanting to explore more challenging dive sites, improve their navigation, experience deeper recreational diving or simply become more comfortable underwater, Advanced Open Water is an important progression.

Five Adventure Dives Over Two Days

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course with Jeff’s Diving World takes place across:

Saturday 24 October 2026

and

Sunday 25 October 2026

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver qualification requires five Adventure Dives.

Two Adventure Dives form the core of the programme.

Deep Adventure Dive

The Deep Adventure Dive introduces divers to deeper recreational diving under instructor supervision.

You’ll develop greater awareness of:

  • Dive planning
  • Depth
  • Air consumption
  • No-decompression limits
  • Underwater communication
  • Buoyancy at depth
  • Environmental considerations
  • Safe recreational diving practices

For many divers, completing their first supervised deeper dives considerably increases their confidence and opens opportunities to experience a greater variety of recreational dive sites.

Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive

Good underwater navigation is one of the most useful abilities a scuba diver can develop.

During the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive, you’ll improve your ability to navigate underwater using a compass alongside natural navigation techniques.

Understanding where you are underwater can improve:

  • Dive planning
  • Confidence
  • Situational awareness
  • Buddy communication
  • Air management
  • Dive enjoyment
  • Your ability to return accurately to planned locations

Navigation skills are valuable whether you’re diving from the shore, a boat, an inland dive centre or travelling overseas.

Three Additional Adventure Dives

The remaining three Adventure Dives provide an opportunity to broaden your diving experience further.

Available Adventure Dives vary according to the location, diving conditions, instructor availability and planned course programme.

Jeff will confirm the three elective Adventure Dives being undertaken during the 24–25 October weekend.

PADI offers Adventure Dive subjects covering many areas of recreational diving, potentially including buoyancy, wreck diving, underwater imaging, fish identification and other specialist diving activities.

Why Take the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

Advanced Open Water isn’t simply about adding another certification card to your collection.

The real value comes from gaining more practical diving experience under professional supervision.

Advanced training can help divers develop:

  • Greater confidence underwater
  • Improved underwater navigation
  • Experience of deeper recreational diving
  • Better situational awareness
  • Improved buoyancy and control
  • Greater understanding of dive planning
  • Experience across different types of diving
  • Increased independence and competence
  • Greater familiarity with diving equipment and procedures

It can also introduce you to types of diving that you may later decide to explore further through dedicated PADI Specialty Diver courses.

Where applicable, individual Adventure Dives may contribute towards corresponding PADI Specialty qualifications, subject to current PADI requirements and your instructor’s assessment.

PADI Advanced Open Water Training at Vobster Quay, Somerset

The course will take place at Vobster Quay Open Water Activity Centre in Somerset.

Vobster Quay is one of the UK’s established inland open-water diving locations and provides an environment specifically used for scuba diving, freediving and open-water activities.

Its inland open-water environment makes Vobster particularly suitable for structured scuba-diving education.

Rather than dealing with some of the logistical challenges associated with boat diving, instructors can concentrate on specific training exercises within an established diving facility.

For students progressing from Open Water certification, this provides an opportunity to concentrate on developing new diving skills while gaining further experience in genuine open-water conditions.

Who Can Take the PADI Advanced Open Water Course?

The course is designed for divers who have completed their initial Open Water training and want to continue developing their diving experience.

Divers can normally begin the Advanced Open Water Diver programme once they hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification, Junior Open Water Diver certification or an appropriate qualifying entry-level certification from another recognised diver-training organisation.

Importantly, you do not need to already consider yourself an “advanced diver” before joining.

The purpose of the course is to help you advance your diving knowledge, confidence and practical skills.

If you hold a scuba-diving qualification from another training organisation or are unsure whether your existing certification meets the requirements, speak directly with Jeff before booking.

Do I Need Lots of Diving Experience?

Advanced Open Water is specifically designed as progression training.

You don’t necessarily need years of diving experience before taking the course.

Many divers progress to Advanced Open Water because they want to gain additional experience while still benefiting from professional instructor supervision.

Jeff can advise whether the course is suitable based on your existing qualification and diving experience.

Is There a Final Exam?

Unlike initial Open Water training, the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver programme is heavily focused on practical diving.

There is knowledge development associated with the individual Adventure Dives, but there is no traditional final examination at the end of the Advanced Open Water Diver course.

This makes Advanced Open Water particularly attractive to divers who want to concentrate on gaining practical underwater experience.

Build Your Diving Confidence With Jeff’s Diving World

Jeff’s Diving World provides scuba-diver education with an emphasis on developing practical diving skills, underwater awareness, knowledge and confidence.

Jeff George continues to develop his own professional diving qualifications and is also a PADI AWARE Shark and Ray Conservation Specialty Instructor, supporting Jeff’s Diving World’s wider commitment to diver education and responsible interaction with the underwater environment.

The Advanced Open Water weekend provides students with an opportunity to dive directly with Jeff while developing skills that can benefit almost every future recreational dive.

Whether you eventually want to explore deeper dive sites, experience wreck diving, improve your buoyancy, travel overseas for scuba diving or simply become a more confident diver, Advanced Open Water provides an important foundation.

What Should I Bring?

Participants should speak directly with Jeff regarding the equipment requirements for the weekend.

Depending upon your individual arrangements and the Adventure Dives being undertaken, you may need:

  • Appropriate personal scuba-diving equipment
  • Exposure protection
  • Certification details
  • Dive computer
  • Compass
  • Mask, fins and snorkel
  • Appropriate cylinders and regulators
  • Additional equipment required for individual Adventure Dives

Because this is an October open-water diving course in the UK, appropriate thermal protection is particularly important.

Discuss exposure protection and equipment requirements with Jeff before attending.

Do not assume that equipment hire, site admission, cylinders, air fills or other charges are included unless Jeff has specifically confirmed them as part of your booking arrangements.

Diving at Vobster Quay in October

UK inland diving during October can provide excellent training opportunities, but water and air temperatures should always be considered.

Using suitable exposure protection allows divers to concentrate properly on their training rather than becoming distracted by the cold.

Your required equipment will depend upon your existing experience, qualifications, personal preferences and the conditions expected during the weekend.

Jeff can advise course participants about the most appropriate arrangements before attending.

Important Vobster Quay Information

Visitors taking part in activities at Vobster Quay may need to complete appropriate site booking and registration arrangements.

Jeff will advise course participants about the arrangements applying specifically to the 24–25 October 2026 training weekend, including:

  • Arrival times
  • Meeting arrangements
  • Site procedures
  • Course requirements
  • Required paperwork
  • Equipment
  • Certification details
  • Any actions that need completing before arrival

Always follow the latest information provided by Jeff’s Diving World and Vobster Quay before travelling.
