πŸ“ Location: Swanage, Dorset

Dive One of Britain’s Most Historic World War II Underwater Sites

Join Jeff’s Diving World for an unforgettable afternoon exploring the famous World War II Valentine DD Tanks resting beneath the waters of Poole Bay near Studland, Dorset.

This fascinating dive combines history, marine life and underwater exploration as we visit one of the UK’s most significant military wreck sites. Resting in approximately 15–16 metres of water, these experimental amphibious tanks were lost during Exercise Smash in April 1944, a major rehearsal ahead of the D-Day landings.

Today the site serves as both an incredible dive location and an official war grave, so all divers are asked to show the utmost respect while visiting.

What You’ll Experience

  • Dive two historic Valentine Duplex Drive (DD) tanks.
  • Explore one of the UK’s most famous WWII underwater sites.
  • Suitable for Open Water divers and above.
  • Maximum depth of approximately 16 metres.
  • Discover thriving marine life including:
    • Large conger eels
    • Shoals of fish
    • Crabs, wrasse and other reef species
  • Learn about the history of Exercise Smash and the role these tanks played in preparations for D-Day.
  • Enjoy a relaxed guided dive with fellow members of Jeff’s Diving World.

Dive Site Information

The two main tanks lie approximately 60 metres apart on relatively flat sandy seabed. Shot lines are normally attached to the first tank, allowing divers to navigate comfortably between both wrecks.

Although visibility varies depending on tides and weather, the site is generally considered an excellent shallow wreck dive and is popular with photographers, historians and recreational divers alike.

Important Information

  • Maximum Depth: 15–16 metres
  • Minimum Qualification: Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Dive Time: Approximately 45–60 minutes (conditions dependent)
  • Surface Interval and Briefing Included
  • Equipment Hire Available (subject to availability)
  • Boat launch via local Swanage charter operator

Respecting History

These tanks were lost during Exercise Smash in April 1944, resulting in the tragic loss of six servicemen. The site is recognised as an official war grave, and divers are reminded not to disturb or remove anything from the wrecks.

We dive to remember, learn and preserve this important piece of British history.
